Two Passions, One Solution
How my daily podcast habit and my Spanish learning journey naturally came together
"I was already listening to podcasts every day, so I figured, why not learn Spanish from the stories I was already enjoying?"
Hi, I'm Max Essmond, and this is the story of how two things I already loved came together in a way I never expected. I've had a desire to learn Spanish since I was a teenager, but like many people, I started and stopped many times. I'd get excited about learning, dive into textbooks and apps, learn a bunch of words, and then... life would happen. I'd get bored, lose motivation, and forget everything I'd learned.
Even when I traveled to Argentina, I made good progress. My accent was pretty good, and I could get by in conversations. But I was missing so many words, and as soon as I got back home, I lost the motivation to continue. I realized I needed something that could be part of my daily routine - something that would keep me engaged and help me maintain my Spanish without feeling like a chore.
The Challenge I Faced
I wasn't alone in this struggle. This is what linguists call the "intermediate plateau" that frustrating period where you know enough to get by, but you're not making real progress. You learn words and forget them. You can have basic conversations, but you're missing so much vocabulary that real discussions feel impossible. Traditional language learning methods just weren't designed to help people progress beyond basic vocabulary and into real fluency.
How I Found My Solution
The breakthrough came when I realized I was already doing something every day that could be the perfect solution: listening to podcasts. I was already a podcast lover - I'd listen during my commute, while cooking, during walks. It was part of my daily routine, and I never got tired of it.
So I thought: why not combine these two things I already love? I started listening to Spanish podcasts, but I quickly realized I needed a structured approach to make it effective for learning. I discovered what linguists call "comprehensible input" - content that's just slightly above your current level, not so easy that you learn nothing new, but not so difficult that you get overwhelmed.
I developed a method that made the difference:
Preparation First
I'd review key vocabulary and context before listening. This "pre-loading" of information made the content more comprehensible without interrupting the natural flow.
Immersive Listening
I'd listen to the full podcast without pausing, forcing my brain to process Spanish at natural speed. This was uncomfortable at first but crucial for developing real-world listening skills.
Strategic Review
After listening, I'd check my understanding with transcripts and targeted exercises, reinforcing what I'd learned without the frustration of constant pausing and translating.
"For the first time, Spanish learning felt natural and sustainable. I was learning from content I actually wanted to listen to."
From Personal Method to Podfluent
I shared my method with other language learners who were struggling with the same challenges, and their results mirrored mine. People who had given up on ever making real progress with Spanish were suddenly finding a sustainable way to learn that actually fit into their daily lives.
That's how Podfluent was born - not as another language app, but as a way to help people learn Spanish through the stories and conversations they actually want to listen to. We believe that language learning should be about real communication and cultural connection, not just memorizing vocabulary lists.
Today, I hope to help many others break through the intermediate plateau with this approach. We've refined the method based on user feedback and the latest research in language acquisition, but the core principles remain the same: preparation, immersion, and strategic review with authentic content that's genuinely interesting. Every podcast in our library is hand-picked for its educational value and authentic language use, designed to make learning feel natural and sustainable.
